Cinco De Mayo in SouthWest: Detroit Art & Culture

Posted on: May 8th, 2012 by Jordette

One of the things that I love most about Detroit is its ethnic diversity. You can literally find every nationality under the sun living in their  own little pocket of the city; that’s what makes Detroit so great.  So when you live in Detroit there is no other place to go for Cinco De Mayo, but Southwest Detroit. Southwest Detroit known to Detroiters’ as “Mexican Town” is predominantly Hispanic, instantly you are immersed into magnificent Spanish culture and art.

“Mexican Town” is called that because many of the Hispanic residents living in Southwest Detroit trace their ancestry back to a town in Mexico called Jalisco, the state in western Mexico known for its fields of agave from which the potent liquor is distilled. To visit the Southwest side of Detroit is literally like leaving the country. Many of the signs are in Spanish, you can find authentic Spanish cuisine, beautiful wall murals and so much more.  Here are a few shots jewels that are found in Southwest Detroit.

Creative Fashion & Beauty Creations

Many times we over think things wouldn’t you agree? Well I came across some really simple fashion and beauty creations that could change a girl’s boot game and the way she stores her hair appliances.

There has been many a day that the nerves in my feet have sent signals to my brain that they were sweating to death in my boots from my fisherman cable knit socks. Doesn’t this fashion illusion just make sense?

Alas, a way to do away with the intertwined curler, flat irons in various sizes, and hair dryer that create that cord blob in your storage unit. Not only can you place the pvc piping on the drawer under the sink you can also place them on the back of the door where they are easy to reach and plug right into the wall.

DIY Cat Eye Frames

This is a great idea to jazz up and old pair of frames or take a dollar store pair up a notch.

  1. Decide on the shape and style for your pattern and trace onto paper. Create two of these and “test” on your sunglasses to make sure you’re happy with the shape and size.
  2. Trace the pattern onto a think black piece of fabric or leather.
  3. Use glue to secure onto each side of the frame.
